Dr. Laird Ackerson, O.D.

Dr. Laird Ackerson, O.D.

Dr. Laird Ackerson has lived in the Hilliard area since 1964.  He has been involved in numerous community activities including the Hilliard Optimists and Lions Clubs.  He has coached baseball since 1975 for Hilliard area children.  He started his practice in 1982 and continues to live and work in his hometown.  His interests include: Sports Vision, Contact Lenses, Ocular Health, Vision Training, Pediatric Optometry and treatment of eye disease.  Dr. Ackerson believes in staying on the cutting edge of technology.  He believes preventative care is better than fixing a problem.  Did you know that the average optometrist takes 25 hrs of continuing education a year?  Dr. Ackerson took over 70 hrs last year!

Dr. Ackerson is a member of the following professional groups:

  • American Optometric Association
  • Ohio Optometric Association
  • American Optometric Association Sports Vision Section
  • American Optometric Association Contact Lens Section
  • Optometric Extension Program Associate
  • College of Vision Development

Dr. Ackerson is a multi-year recipient of the American Optometric Recognition Award and has over 300 hours of Post Doctorate Education in Behavioral and Developmental Optometry.

Dr. Kathryn Vanderhorst, O.D.

Dr. Kathryn Vanderhorst, O.D.

Dr. Kathryn Vanderhorst is originally from St. Marys, Ohio.  She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton and graduated Magna cum Laude from the Ohio State University College of Optometry.  She began her career as an optometrist here at the Ackerson Eyecare Center in August of 2006.  She lives in Hilliard with her husband Brian and her two sons, Wesley and Bennett.  She loves the close-knit feel of the community.

Dr. Vanderhorst is an active member of the Hilliard community. She is involved in the Junior League of Columbus, which is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism and improving our communities.  She volunteers for the RealEyes classroom initiative by visiting the Hilliard elementary schools and educating the students about the importance of eye health and safety.  And she has also participated in giving free eye exams and glasses to Hilliard students who could not afford to see an optometrist on their own.

Dr. Vanderhorst is a member of both the American Optometric Association and the Ohio Optometric Association.

Dr. Lucy Pickering, O.D.

Dr. Lucy Pickering, O.D.

Dr. Lucy Pickering joined Ackerson Eyecare in August of 2010. Originally from Stow, Ohio, Dr. Pickering received her Bachelor of Science from Georgetown College and her Doctor of Optometry from The Ohio State University College of Optometry.  She completed her residency in primary care and ocular disease at the VA Medical Center in Hampton, Virginia.  During her residency, she served as a clinical assistant professor for the OSU college of Optometry, and a continuing education lecturer for the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Optometry.  Her areas of special intrest include diabetic eye diease and contact lenses.

Dr. Pickering currently resides in Dublin with her husband, Eric. Above all, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and her favorite activities include running, tennis, biking, hiking, and traveling.  She feels it is important to be physically and socially active within her community.  Therefore, she volunteers with, and participates in, numerous charity events and fund raisers benefiting organizations such as the American Lung Association and the Centeral Ohio Diabetes Association.  She also attends St. Brendan's Catholic Church.  Dr. Pickering is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Ohio Optometric Association, and Central Ohio Optometric Association.
